2° (285 x 195mm). Woodcut device on title, initials, head- and tailpieces, 39 engravings in the text, 5 of which full-page including one with blank verso illustrating musical instruments. (Occasional light spotting, small repair to margin of O3 touching three letters, final leaf with pink ink numbers in bottom margin.) Old vellum (rebacked). Provenance: deleted ownership inscription on title.
FIRST AND ONLY EDITION OF THIS RARE AND HANDSOMELY ILLUSTRATED WORK. The book discusses the nature of winds, and has fine engravings of windmills and ships, as well as compass roses and wind-maps of the world, including the Americas. Only around ten pages at the end of the work are about earthquakes. A full-page world map, Carta Marina, in the style of Gastaldi, has an overlaid approximately circular grid of rhumb lines.
