2 parts, 2° (285 x 196mm). Elaborate engraved title border, woodcut illustrations and diagrams throughout, 6- to 8-line woodcut historiated initials. (Title with paper repairs and minor losses, the most significant being to the date which is supplied in manuscript, leaves somewhat crinkled, some headlines slightly cropped.) Old vellum (crinkled and worn).

FIRST EDITION. Pini was a canon regular of the congregation of the Salvatorians and a native of Bologna. His book, one of the earliest works on the sundial to be written in the vernacular, gives a brief history, then goes on to explain how particular sundials are made and the correct use of the analemma. While it has a strong basis in the work of Clavius, it does suggest innovations in the manufacture of solar clocks. The allegorical title border and the illustrations of portable timepieces, such as the dial in the interior of a breviary, are admirable. Houzeau and Riccardi also cite a 1626 Bologna edition, but only this Venice edition appears in SBN. Houzeau and Lancaster 11395: ‘ouvrage important et bien fait’; Riccardi I(ii) 280: ‘raro e molto pregiato’; not in BL/STC.
