PTOLOMAEUS, Claudius (2nd century) and Giovanni MAGNINI (editor). Geographiae universiae. Cologne: Petrus Keschedt, 1597.

2 parts in one volume, 4° (222 x 165mm). Engraved title in both parts, 64 engraved maps including one folding, woodcut diagrams, head- and tail-pieces, and ornamental initials, with the blank E4 at end of pt.I. (Upper margin of title and following two leaves with a crude repair, small tear in outer margin of title repaired, title tipped in, final four leaves of index of pt. II with small wormtrack affecting a few letters, some mainly light waterstaining, stronger at beginning, browned.) Contemporary blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards (rebacked in calf, soiled, rubbed, new endpapers). Provenance: Sigismund Nöth (ownership inscription on title) – Retz Monastery (inscriptions on pastedown and on title [one dated 1664], and stamp in bottom margin of title) – bookplate removed from rear pastedown.

Second edition of Ptolemy’s Geographia edited by Giovanni Magnini, first published in Venice in 1596. The maps are exact copies of Girolamo Porro's maps used for the first edition and later Venetian editions. This is the issue without the colophon at the end of the 'Index' (corresponding with a copy at Harvard). The double-page world map is a smaller version of Rumbold Mercator's which had appeared ten years earlier. Adams M-117; Alden & Landis 597/57; Phillips Atlases 404 (issue with colophon); Sabin 66493 and 43822; Shirley 201-204.
