REGIOMONTANUS (Johannes Müller, 1436-1476). De triangulis planis et sphaericis libri quinque. [Bound with:] SANTBECH, Daniel. Problematum astronomicorum et geometricorum sectiones septem. Basel: Heinrich Petri and Pietro Perna, 1561.
2 works in one volume as issued, 2° (305 x 192mm). Numerous woodcut illustrations and diagrams, woodcut initials. (Some browning, heavy in some leaves, a few margins lightly waterstained, large part of margin of colophon leaf torn away and repaired.) Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine (new endpapers, lightly soiled). Provenance: erased inscription (on title) -- bookseller’s label (pastedown).
THE FIRST SYSTEMATIC PRINTED WORK ON TRIGONOMETRY. Third edition. De triangulis was Regiomontanus's most important scientific contribution. Completed in 1464, it remained in manuscript for nearly seventy years before being published in 1533 in Nuremberg by Johann Petri. It contains the earliest statement of the cosine law for spherical triangles, stating the proportionality of the sides of a plane triangle to the sines of the opposite angle. This fundamental proposition of spherical trigonometry appears as theorem 2 in book V of the treatise. In the second part, Regiomontanus proves the errors of Nicolaus de Cusa's theory of squaring the circle, which had a profound effect on the history of navigation. Adams R-281 (both works); Houzeau and Lancaster 2500; cf. Norman 1566 (1st work).
