SCHEINER, Christoph (1573-1650). Oculus hoc est: fundamentum opticum. London: J. Flesher, Cambridge: William Morden, 1652.
Small 4° (200 x 160mm). Woodcut diagrams, head- and tailpieces, with the first blank. (Lightly spotted, a few margins lightly waterstained.) Old vellum, manuscript title on spine (lightly soiled). Provenance: ‘Domus Professe Venete Soc. Jesu. B.C.’ (inscription on blank) – unidentified bookplate (pastedown).
First published in Innsbruck in 1619, this was an important work on the anatomy of the eye. Together with a variant of the same year, it is the only one of Scheiner’s works to be printed in England. Wing S-858; cf. Garrison and Morton 1480.
