12º (140 x 81mm). Two hand-coloured woodcut headpieces. (Sectional title on H2r with bottom line border cropped away, G2 and a few other leaves close shaved at margin.) Later 18th-century half calf with green morocco label (a little rubbed and chipped).

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of ‘the earliest book dealing with clocks and watches to be published in England’ (Bromley). The appendix by William Oughtred, 'wherein is contained a method of calculating all numbers for watches,’ has a separate title-page on H2r. Smith also wrote the Horological Disquisitions concerning the true nature of time, and the reasons why all days … are not alike twenty-four hours long (London, 1694).
