2° (295 x 201mm). With the blank [*]8, woodcut portrait of Stöffler attributed to Holbein the Younger on final leaf, woodcut diagrams and initials. (First and last few leaves very lightly soiled, the final leaf with the portrait laid down, very light browning, some margins lightly waterstained.) Remboitage of old vellum (sides a little warped), modern case. Provenance: Jesuit College Freiburg im Breisgau (inscriptions on title dated 1618 and 1664).

FIRST EDITION, published posthumously by Ludovic Schradin. Stöffler, professor of mathematics at the University of Tübingen, was a highly important and influential astronomer, who counted both Melanchthon and Sebastian Münster among his students. His commentary on Proclus's Sphaera became extremely influential and was studied by the most important astronomers of the Renaissance. It also contains two important references to the discovery of America by Colombus on leaves 24 and 54. Adams S-1897; Houzeau and Lancaster 2449; Sabin 91983; Zinner 1579.
