STOFFLER, Johannes (1452-1531). Elucidatio fabricae usuque astrolabii ... Ex secunda autoris recognitione. Oppenheim: Jakob Köbel, 1524.
2º (294 x 212mm). Title with woodcut architectural border, large woodcut diagrams of the astrolabe, those on C4 and D3 with three and two extension flaps respectively, woodcut celestial charts and scenes showing surveying techniques, several smaller cuts, large woodcut floral initials, printer’s device on colophon leaf. (Lacks the flaps called for by Adams at A6 and B3, browning to title and a small minority of leaves, repaired worm track at upper margin of title and preliminaries, marginal repairs to title and final leaf, b1 mounted on guard, A6 with repairs to outer margin slightly affecting diagram, occasional light marginal soiling.) Modern vellum with ties.
Third edition listed by Houzeau and Lancaster. Stöffler took up the newly established chair of mathematics and astronomy at the University of Tübingen in 1507, by which time he already enjoyed a virtual monopoly of ephemeris publishing. His book on the construction and use of the astrolabe first appeared under Köbel's imprint in 1512-13, and was published in some 16 editions up until 1620, serving as a standard work for astronomers and surveyors. Adams S-1887; Houzeau and Lancaster 3256; Zinner 1270; cf. Gingerich, Rara Astronomica 11.
