Text in double column. Title with device, woodcut author portrait on verso, woodcut of a knife on F2r, occult diagram on M3r. WIER, J. De lamiis liber: item De commentitiis ieiunis. Basle: Oporinus, 1577. Double column. Title with device, woodcut author portrait on verso, woodcut portrait of a young girl on H4v. (Worming at lower margin, some waterstaining and soiling.)
2 works in one volume, 4° (247 x 190mm). Contemporary pigskin over wood boards, covers with blind-stamped fillets and rolls, brass bosses and clasps, front cover inscribed ‘Mars 1585’ (rather worn and soiled, crudely rebacked). Provenance: textual annotations in first work, mainly in one untidy hand – G.W. Borowsky (signature on title) -- other inscriptions on title and pastedowns.
The De praestigiis daemonum, first published in 1564, was a major treatise on demonology and the powers of necromancy by Johann Wier, physician to the duke of Cleves and pupil of Agrippa; this later edition is bound with the first edition of his shorter and not unsympathetic work on ‘lamiae’ or witches. Adams W-149 & W-141; Caillet III, 11433 (2nd work).
