2° (367 x 230mm). Engraved double-page frontispiece of the museum by G. Wingendorp, engraved portrait of Worm by Wingendorp after C. van Mander, 139 woodcuts and 13 engravings in text. (Filled in wormtrack at lower corner of title and early leaves, marginal spotting to title and frontispiece, two preliminaries waterstained, further waterstaining in gutter, occasional browning, corner torn from F2 and Aaa1.) Contemporary gilt-panelled red turkey, gilt edges (lightly rubbed and bumped, unobtrusive scuff marks on rear cover). Provenance: GLP (monogram stamp on title).
FINELY BOUND COPY. For most of the period that Worm was collecting, he was professor of medicine at the University of Copenhagen. ‘A gifted polymath, Worm collected many types of objects, especially those of natural history and man-made artifacts, which he carefully arranged and classified, following a rigorous method ... His museum, which became one of the great attractions in Copenhagen, is illustrated in Museum Wormianum,’ published posthumously by his son William (DSB XIV, p.505 ). The collection, purchased by Frederick III on Worm's death, was one of the first open to the public on payment of an admission charge. Nissen ZBI 4473; Willems 772.
