Lot Essay

The secretaire corresponds to a design dated 1798 in Gillows' Estimate Sketch Book, illustrated in L. Boynton Gillows Furniture Designs 1760 - 1800, 1995, p.171, pl. 155. A secretaire of this pattern stamped by Gillows is illustrated in R. Edwards, Dictionary of English Furniture, 1954, vol. I, p.157, fig.79, and again in R. Edwards and M. Jourdain, Georgian Cabinet Makers, 1955, p.218, fig 189. Another, from Lindsay Boynton's collection is illustrated in Susan Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, Woodbridge, 2008, vol. II, p. 24, pl. 556.
