A PARCEL-GILT SILVER REPOUSSE ‘PRAYING MANTIS’ DOUBLE-GOURD VASE
LIAO DYNASTY (907-1125)
The vase is finely hammered on the lower body with a raised praying mantis perched on a broad leaf, chased on the rest of the surface with be-ribboned motifs and another single leaf, between pendent lappets on top and a trefoil band above the foot. The upper bulb of the body is chased with a band of foliage scroll above upright blades, and a band of overlapping petals below the neck.
