POLITICAL CARTOON – The Pennsylvania Chronicle and Universal Advertiser. Philadelphia: William Goddard, 19 September 1772. Vol.6, No.36.
Very early woodcut political cartoon lampooning the loyalist “Americanus” (Joseph Galloway). The caption reads, “Americanus, heavy laden, with the 5 Mile Stone on his Back, trampling on the Goddess Liberty, the Bill of Rights, and Pennsylvania Charter, on his Way to Bucks County Election….” In the woodcut itself, a devil whispers in Americanus’s ear: “Don’t flinch my Dear Galloway, I’ll support you.” Joseph Galloway (1731-1803) was a well-respected attorney, principled constitutionalist, and a member of the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly from 1756 to 1774. He served in the First Continental Congress and his proposal to compromise with Great Britain and avoid revolution was rejected by only one vote. The present cartoon is a very early and strident attack on Galloway’s character, accompanied by a vitriolic article by the publisher, William Goddard. A few years later, Galloway would indeed be campaigning with the British. We know of only one earlier cartoon in a newspaper, being Franklin’s snake cartoon which appeared in only one issue. This is the next known and much more complicated, even employing word balloons.
