Le faune original en marbre se trouvait certainement à la villa Borghèse en 1638 et y est resté jusqu'en 1807 date à laquelle il est acheté par Napoléon Ier pour le musée du Louvre. La renommée de cette statue au XVIIe siècle est confirmée par le fait qu'elle a été copiée pour Louis XIV par Simon Hutrelle et Jean-Baptiste Goy. Au XVIIIe siècle, elle est fréquemment admirée par les voyageurs et souvent reproduite.
The Faun was certainly in the Villa Borghese by 1638. The fame of this statue in the seventeenth century is supported by the fact that it was copied for Louis XIV by both Simon Hurtrelle and by Jean-Baptiste Goy. In the eighteenth century it was frequently admired by travellers and frequently reproduced. In September 1807 it was purchased by Napoleon Bonaparte and send to the Musée du Louvre, were it was displayed for the first time in 1815.
