Cet impressionnant buste en marbre a été réalisé d'après le très célèbre antique conservé aux musées du Vatican à Rome. Connu sous le nom de Jupiter d'Otricoli, il a été découvert pendant les fouilles financées par le pape Pie VI en 1775 dans la ville du même nom à 70 km au nord de Rome. Il devient immédiatement très populaire et reste aujourd'hui une représentation très séduisante du roi des dieux de l'Olympe, dégageant une forte impression de pouvoir à travers les traits marqués du visage, le cou épais et les cheveux léonins profondément sculptés.
