Lot Essay

Bamboo vessels carved with archaistic motifs are known to exist, but the flattened moonflask shape is rare as it is difficult to attain. Compare to a bianhu form vessel with taotie masks in the collection of the Beijing Palace Museum, see The Palace Museum Collection of Elite Carvings, Beijing, 2002, pl. 58. For another example in moonflask shape from the Daoguang period belonging to Dr. Ip Yee Collection, see Chinese Bamboo Carving Part I, Hong Kong, 1978, pl. 182.
