Lot Essay

The present pair of chairs are unusual for the carved openwork decoration found on the aprons and spandrels below the seat. Compare to a similar pair of huanghuali lamphanger side chairs with the more common construction of cusped apron and spandrels, sold at Christie’s, New York, 24 March 2011, lot 1385.
