Lot Essay

The present cabinet is unusual for its diminutive size. Typically, cabinets of this type are known for their massive size and are constructed with a flush frame. However, variations on this type are known. Compare, for example, the huanghuali compound cabinet and hat chest of similar construction, although of more elongated form, illustrated by G. Ecke in Chinese Domestic Furniture, Vermont and Tokyo, 1962, p. 134, no. 106. See, also, a rare small huanghuali compound cabinet and hat chest, formerly from the Arthur M. Sackler Collection, measuring 95.3 cm. high, sold at Christie’s New York, 18 March 2009, lot 373.
