Lot Essay

The xiangji is a stand for censers. They are a decorative and necessary part of an elegant Chinese household. The format with a round top, rarer than these with square tops, and five legs became popular during the Ming dynasty and was frequently illustrated from then on. The present example is a fine piece of lacquered furniture with a harmonious carved and painted decoration of auspicious motifs including birds and flowers and ruyi heads.
