RARE WINES FROM AN NOTABLE COLLECTOR

The following eleven lots come from the collection of an important collector. Prior to sale the wines were stored in temperature and humidity controlled conditions in his professional storage since purchase.

The collector acquired the Petrus 1947 from a Christie’s London sale in November 2007. The consignors of the wine in that sale could trace ownership back directly to the original purchase in barrel from the Château in the late 1940's and subsequent bottling by the respected Belgian firm of Vandermeulen.

The bottles, part of a larger stock, have always been stored in conditions of natural cool temperature and moderate humidity and display excellent levels and label condition accordingly. This must be a close to unique opportunity for someone wishing to acquire a full case of Pétrus 1947. In similar circumstances to the Pétrus 1947, the collector acquired the following cases of Château La Mission Haut Brion 1947 and 1955 from a Christie’s London auction in October 2013. The cases came from a Belgian collector who had purchased the cases directly from Vandermeulen, Oostende in the late 1950's, and who still had the original invoices of purchase.

DOM PERIGNON

In 1935 Moët were asked to supply a special bottling for their British importers, Simon Bros and Co., to celebrate the London firm's centennial. The Epenay house provided 300 specially commissioned heavy bottomed bottles with a shield-shaped label which bore the inscription, "Champagne especially shipped fro Simon Bros and Co.'s Centenary 1835-1935". Bottles of the 1926 vintage were sent to the importer's top 150 customers. Even in the post-prohibition era, there was great demand for luxury cuvées and word spread amongst affluent American society. In response to these requests, 100 cases were shipped to New York in November 1936, this time importing the finer and more mature 1921 vintage. Moët decided to name this cuvée Dom Pérignon, after Champagne's founding father. The 1921 vintage and subsequent vintages up to 1943 underwent secondary fermentation in a regular bottle before being transferred into the custom Dom Pérignon bottles we still know today.
