Four pieces in the present lot, to the left of the catalogue photograph, are painted in the 'May Avenue' pattern developed in 1933. This pattern is widely recognized as one of the most beautiful of Clarice Cliff’s designs and the present Cliff auction record is for a Charger painted in this pattern. The pattern is reminiscent of the works of Modigliani, particularly his Landscapes at Cagnes of 1919, with its spade-shaped trees.
