This design often appears in Song dynasty ink paintings, and is one of the most iconic representation of Song dynasty chairs.
The complementary wood grains on the back plate and side panels enhance the chair's overall visual harmony. There is a perfect balance between the ethereal space created under and above the seat. Unlike the sturdy designs of Ming and Qing dynasties, the apertures within the aprons create a sense of lightness in the design.
