In the same private collection for more than a decade, this rare and unusual steel reference 3484 impresses by its very good overall condition and the striking non-luminous black dial with gilt printing and both tachymetre and telemetre scales. The case is designed with a flat band and straight angled lugs lending it a very clean minimalist look emphasized by the contrast of the steel and the rich black and gilt dial.
In common with other Rolex references at this period such as the “monoblocco” ref. 3525 (see lot 120 in this auction), the serial and reference numbers are on the outside of the case back as opposed to between the lugs of later models. Particularly sensible to wear or careless polishing, both numbers are still very crisp, underlining the very good overall condition of this rare chronograph.
Reference 3484 was in production from 1939 to 1948 and was cased either in stainless steel or gold. The model is described and illustrated in I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda, Pucci Papaleo Editore, pp. 132 & 133.
