Lot Essay

Born in Cambridge in 1881 Stafford Leake studied at Camden School of Art and travelled in France and East Africa. He exhibited at The Fine Art Society, Royal Society of British Artists and The New English Arts Club.

Argenteuil, a north-western suburb of Paris was only a train ride from Gare Saint-Lazare and was a popular boating and rowing destination. It was considered 'an agreeable petite ville' by the Impressionists and Monet settled there in 1871. It became the subject of many of his works and was also favoured by Renoir, Manet, Sisley and Caillebotte.
