The Passion
the complete set of fourteen engravings, 1521, on laid paper, two sheets with watermark Shield with Sun with pendant Letter b (Briquet 13979, Gray, France 1513), the others without watermark, very fine to very good, early, atmospheric impressions, including three impressions of an undescribed, early proof state before the monogram and date (B. 43, 44 & 45) the others New Hollstein's first state (of three), printing with great clarity and contrasts, with thread margins or trimmed to the subject, a few tiny paper losses and minor repairs at the sheet edges, otherwise in very good condition

Lot Essay

This set compares favourably to the fine impressions from the Brooke Collection in the British Museum. The majority of the impressions in the present set are finer in comparison, with greater tonal effects in the forms and shadows, and more intense, luminous contrasts.
