SIGNED CHEN JULAI (1904-1984), REPUBLIC PERIOD
The irregularly shaped seal is carved in low relief to the top with a wispy cloud, incised on one side with the signature Julai. The seal face is carved with the characters Zuo’an suocang, ‘Collection of Zuo’an’.

Lot Essay

Chen Julai is a renowned seal carver, calligrapher, painter and poet from Zhejiang. Zuo’an is the pseudonym of Li Zuhan (1891-1971), a businessman from Ningbo who was a prominent patron of the master painter Zhang Daqian.
