En placage d'amarante, bois de rose, bois satiné et marqueterie de charme teinté, le dessus de marbre brèche d'Alep restauré, ornementation de bronze ciselé et doré, à décor de fleurs dans des cartouches, la façade en arbalète ouvrant par un abattant gainé au revers d'un cuir rouge doré aux petits fers et découvrant six tiroirs et cinq casiers, puis deux vantaux découvrant six casiers; estampillé MIGEON sur le montant avant gauche, deux fois JME sur le montant arrière gauche et EHB sur le centre du plateau ; accidents et insolation au placage, petites modifications en partie basse

Lot Essay

Le marchand-mercier Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845), 'Purveyor of China, Earthenware and Glass to William IV' (1832-7) et 'Purveyor of China to Queen Victoria' (1838-45), était à la fois marchand et fabricant de meubles et objets d'art de goût français. Etabli sur Hanway street, son entreprise fut florissante entre 1805 et 1843. Il employa la marque 'E.H.B.' autant sur les pièces d'époque, essentiellement en marqueterie Boulle et Louis XV qu'il restaurait et revendait que sur les œuvres exécutées dans ses ateliers, inspirées des modèles français. Figure éminente du commerce d'antiquités, son nom est associé aux plus importantes collections de mobilier français du début du XIXe siècle en Angleterre dont celle du roi George IV, des ducs de Buccleuch et de Northumberland, de William Beckford et de George Byng.
