MÜLLER, Gerhard Friedrich. Nouvelle Carte des Decouvertes faites par des Vaisseaux Russiens Aux côtes inconnues de l’Amerique Septentrionale Avec les Pais Adiacents. St. Petersburg: Imperial Academy of Sciences, 1758. Engraved map (641 x 478mm, to the plate mark; 670 x 525mm, the sheet), handcolored in outline (short tears, some reaching into the engraving, repaired; partly backed along the central fold, and the left and right edges; light soiling); window matted (640 x 808mm). Provenance [book and map]: Maggs Bros. Ltd.
The first edition of the first full account of Bering’s expeditions, together with Müller’s rare map. According to Lada-Mocarski, Müller wrote the fulsome text (305 pages) as an explanation for this map; the map was never issued with the text but published separately. The map is in the second state, with the date corrected from “1754” to “1758”, and with a slightly different title: it is the same issue to which Müller refers in the text. Müller gives extensive summaries of voyages in the North Pacific, including Bering’s first expedition, during which the strait was named, and the first detailed account of the second expedition. Parts of Müller’s account were omitted in later translation, and only appear in this German original. This volume also includes an important account of Captain Spangenberg’s 1739 expedition from Kamchatka to explore the Japanese coast. Howes M-875; Lada-Mocarski 15; Wickersham 6331; and [for the map]: Wagner I, 157 and II, 591; Streeter sale 3457.
