The very rare first edition of Staehlin’s "important work in the history of Northwest coast exploration" (Hill). Staehlin collects here the discoveries of Russian traders in the Alaskan archipelago, along with Russian senate reports on the geography of the North Pacific. This book represents the vanguard of Russian geographic knowledge of the region at that time, excepting the data gained by Krenitsin and Levashev on their “secret expedition.” Their map, however, just as Staehlin’s, still represents Alaska as an island. ABPC and RBH record no other copies at auction. See Hill 1624; Howes S-683; Lada-Mocarski 20; Sabin 90064; Smith 9802; Tourville 4276; Wickersham 5825.

12mo (161 x 89mm). Engraved folding map. 19th-century calf, edges red. Provenance: Warren Heckrotte (his sale, PBA Galleries, 29 October 2015, lot 81).
