The first edition of Benyowsky’s popular memoir, from the library of Sir John Gladstone. After being exiled to Siberia by the Russians, Benyowsky led 70 prisoners on an escape mission out of Kamchatka, sailing to Japan, Formosa, and China. His memoir offers interesting (and perhaps occasionally fantastical) accounts of Siberia, the Russian fur trade, and the customs of Kamchatka. The escape party also allegedly reached the Alaskan mainland. Cordier Japonica 454; Cordier Sinica 277; Hill 115; Lada-Mocarski 45.

Two volumes, quarto (277 x 213mm). 23 engraved plates (tear affecting text on p. 285; one plate trimmed by the binder). Contemporary tree calf. Provenance: Sir John Gladstone of Fasque (1764-1851; bookplate), Scottish MP and slave trader – Reg and Philip Remington Books.
