The first edition of this Pacific voyage to China and Japan, edited by James Smith to benefit Campbell who had returned to his native country in April 1812 having lost both his feet to frostbite following shipwreck on the Eclipse and a journey in a long boat along the coast of Alaska to Kodiak (see preface). Campbell was sent to Hawaii to recover from his injuries, and lived there from January 1809 to March 1810. "The author lived among the chiefs and then with Isaac Davis [...] His keen firsthand observations on the social structure and agricultural practices of Hawaiians are of great importance" (Forbes).
