An extra-illustrated first edition of the voyage of Herman Melville’s uncle, with presentation inscription: Lem. C. Richmond, Esq. / with affectionate regards / John D'Wolf. D’Wolf had only 100 copies printed of this work, which documents his voyage to Sitka, and the journey afterwards to accompany Governor Alexander Baranov across Siberia back to St. Petersburg. This copy is illustrated by four lithographs not present in any other recorded copies, as well as a photograph of the author, and is a valuable source of information on life in Russian America. Herman Melville not only used his uncle’s experiences as inspiration, but included him as a character in Moby-Dick.
