MALASPINA EXPEDITON – VALDES, Manuel Antonio (fl. late 18th c.). Gazetas de México: compendio de noticias de Nueva Espana. Mexico: Don Mariano de Zu´n~iga y Ontiveros, 1790-1.

A rare contemporary document of the Malaspina Expedition, pp. 441-443 of the fourth volume of Mexican serial Gazetas de México. The expedition, commanded by Alessandro Malaspina and José de Bustamante y Guerra, surveyed Yakutat Bay and spent time amongst the Tlingit people. The reports and journals of many Spanish expeditions were repressed and often did not see publication until the following century, making this a highly unusual publication—issued while the voyage was still ongoing. See Palau 347618; Sabin 48484.

Quarto (196 x 137mm). Engraved armorial on p. 1. Contemporary calf with labels on spine (some surface losses, part of label missing). Provenance: Bray Books.
