MORTIMER, George (fl. 1790). Observations and Remarks Made During a Voyage to the Islands of Teneriffe, Amsterdam, Maria's Islands near Van Diemen's land, Otaheite, Sandwich Islands, Owhyhee, the Fox Islands on the North West Coast of America, Tinian, and from Thence to Canton, in the Brig Mercury, Commanded by John Henry Cox, Esq. Dublin: P. Byrne, K. Moore, et al., 1791.
The first Irish edition of the important description of Cox’s Pacific voyage, published the same year as the London edition. Although ostensibly a fur trading expedition, Cox’s voyage was actually commissioned by the Swedish Navy as part of that country’s military conflict with Russia. The Mercury was transformed at sea into the Gustav III and under orders to raid Russian settlements in North America—however, the Russians were in such a poor state that Cox gave them supplies instead. Ferguson 111; Forbes 214; cf. Hill 1192; see Lada-Mocarski 48; Sabin 50985; Tourville 3203.
Octavo (213 x 135mm). (Short marginal wormhole affecting first few leaves, faint dampstain marginal to some leaves.) Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Provenance: James Sinclair (signature) – Chinese ownership stamp – Maggs Bros. Ltd.
