PHIPPS, Constantine – The Journal of a Voyage Undertaken by Order of His Present Majesty, for Making Discoveries Towards the North Pole. London: F. Newbery, 1774.

The very rare unofficial description of Constantine Phipps’s journey to the North Sea, in original sheets. This anonymous account, possibly by Captain Skeffington Lutwidge, was published before the official report by Phipps in the same year. The voyage, which turned back from the pole after being blocked-in by pack ice, is also notable for the fact that a young Horatio Nelson served as midshipman and survived a memorable encounter with a polar bear. No copies recorded by ABPC or RBH since the 1960s. Hill 899; Sabin 62573.

Octavo (226 x 137mm). One engraved plate, 2 folding engraved maps (without final blank, final leaf strengthened, light marginal dampstain to first map). Uncut in original sheets; red cloth box. Provenance: Meridian Rare Books.
