ROQUEFEUIL, Camille de (1781-1831). Journal d’un voyage autour du monde pendant les années 1816, 1817, 1818 et 1819. Paris: Ponthieu, Lesage, Gide, 1823.
The first edition of Roquefeuil’s account of his circumnavigation via the Pacific and the only account of the first official French voyage after Baudin, in original wrappers. The voyage was the third French circumnavigation and the present includes important chapters on California, the Northwest Coast, and Alaska. "Attempts at trading in California, Nootka, and Sitka were financial failures. Despite lack of profit, however, France now had an up-to-date report on conditions on the west coast of America from California to the Aleutians, on Hawaii, the Marquesas, and on the prospects for trade in each of these areas. In the section on the northwest coast of America, Roquefeuil gives many details of the Indian inhabitants" (Hill). Despite its successes, and although the voyage had been authorized by the French Ministry, upon return Roquefeuil was denied promotion and therefore resigned from the Royal Navy. Forbes 569; Hill 1483 (English edition); Howes R-438; Lada-Mocarski 86; Sabin 73149.
Two volumes, octavo (206 x 135mm). Two engraved folding maps. Original reddish-pink wrappers (minor wear to extremities). Provenance: ownership inscription (front wrapper) – Hordern House.
