SARYCHEV, Gavril Andreevich (1763-1831). Plate XVI from Atlas severnoi chasti Vostochnago Okeana [Atlas of the Northern Part of the Pacific Ocean]. [St. Petersburg: at the Naval Press, 1826.]

A plate from Sarychev’s rare atlas of 1826, showing the coastline of Kodiak island from Chiniak point to Kodiak town. The map includes an inset view of the Russian-American colony near Pavlov Harbor – the first Russian settlement in Alaska – and a detail plan of the harbor. RBH and ABPC record no copy of the atlas having been offered at auction. WorldCat locates just one complete copy, at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and one incomplete copy in the U.S. Geological Survey Library.

Engraved map (895 x 615mm) on wove paper (1350 x 670mm), (backed with translucent paper; marginal chips, one of these large but not touching the engraving; tears, including some reaching into the image, but stabilized by the backing). Provenance: Alta California – Warren Heckrotte (his sale, PBA Galleries, 10 March 2016, lot 233).
