The first edition in French, including the atlas volume. Sauer’s work documents the Russian Northeast Expedition led by Captain Billings. He served as secretary on the voyage and Lada-Mocarski notes that he was "critical of Billings and sorely disappointed when Billings decided to abandon the idea of going back to the American coast, south of Cook's River." Two text volumes, octavo (195 x 120mm) and quarto atlas (300 x 225mm). Text: Half-titles (a little intermittent foxing). Quarto gilt morocco over marbled boards (lightly scuffed). Atlas: 14 engraved plates, 1 engraved folding map (some abrading to title-page, partially obscuring text). Original wrappers (chipping and wear to spine and extremities). Provenance: Shapero Rare Books.
