The first separate edition of this rare survey of Russian circumnavigations. It covers all ships, including those of the Russian-American Company which sailed to the North Pacific, even if they failed to reach their destination or to make the return. A number of these are not strictly speaking circumnavigations, but are included still. Ivashintsov was especially interested in the hydrographical data collected during these voyages, which he compiles into a very substantial table of nearly 100 pages. Ivashintsov, who eventually reached the rank of Rear Admiral, was awarded the Russian Geographical Society’s Konstantin prize, primarily for his hydrographic work. His review first appeared as parts 7 and 8 of Zapiski gidrograficheskago departmenta Morskago Ministerstva (1849-1850). Wickersham notes that 25 offprints of Ivashintsov’s Zapiski chapters were issued, none for sale. RBH and ABPC record no copy of any issue having been offered at auction; WorldCat locates two copies only: at the New York Public Library, and at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Howes I-91; cf. Lada-Mocarski 135 (Zapiski); Wickersham 6328.

Octavo (235 x 137mm). (Title repaired in the top margin; occasional scattered, mostly marginal spotting.) Contemporary Russian dark green roan and green marbled boards, the spine lettered in gilt, white moiré style endpapers (extremities rubbed; sides faded near the edges, and lightly scuffed). Provenance: “A.N.” (Cyrillic initials at spine foot) – Wayfarer’s Bookshop.
