PARRY EXPEDITION – SABINE, Edward, editor. The North Georgia Gazette and Winter Chronicle. London: John Murray, 1821.
A presentation copy of the "newspapers" written on Parry's first expedition while trapped in the ice near Melville Island, 1819-1820, inscribed secretarially on the half-title, "Mrs. Hille With Capt. Parry's kind regards". The contents leaves bear some manuscript annotation ascribing the authorship of several articles to [then Lieutenant] Parry, perhaps made by Parry or at his direction. The North Georgia Gazette had the stated purpose of alleviating winter boredom for the ship's crew, but it also served to heighten public interest in Arctic exploration. It is a good example of Parry's care for his men; his diligence in this regard set the standard for British Arctic exploration in the 19th century. Arctic Bib. 12547.
Quarto (280 x 223mm). Half-title. (Minor toning, few spots.) Original plain boards (neatly rebacked, minor edge-wear). Provenance: Mrs Hille (presentation inscription, few manuscript annotations) – Wessel & Lieberman Booksellers.
