The Explorers Club set of the publications of the Royal Geographical Society, from its founding in 1830 through 1912. Representing a wealth of data and narratives, including those by (to name just a few): Robert Austin, John Barrow, Richard Burton, Richard Collinson, Charles Doughty, Joseph Dalton Hooker, Elisha Kent Kane, E.A. Inglefield, Sir Clements Markham, Francis M’Clintock, Sherard Osborn, John Rae, A.J. Richardson, Berthold Seeman, Warrington Smyth, John Hanning Speke, George Wallin, Alfred Wallace, and James Wellsted. Many of these would be the first reports. Being the former set of the Explorers Club of New York (founded 1904), this is an outstanding transatlantic association set.
Together, 130 volumes, octavo and small quarto. Copiously illustrated with plates, folding maps and charts. Contemporary half calf except the vols 10-14 of the New Series in original cloth and the Geographical Journal in contemporary cloth, apparently bound from individual monthly parts (general shelfwear, some restoration to spines of Journal, some flaking to spine labels, vol. 1 of Proceedings rebacked, cloth vols. with cracked hinges, a few vols. with text blocks detaching). Sold as a set, not subject to return. Provenance: James B. Ford (presentation bookplates to) – The Explorers Club of New York (bookplates, blindstamps to titles and internally).
