BRITISH PARLIAMENTARY PAPERS – FRANKLIN SEARCH. Papers Relative to the Recent Arctic Expeditions in Search of Sir John Franklin and the Crews of HMS "Erebus" and "Terror." London: printed by Eyre and Spottiswoode for Her Majesty’s Stationery Office, 1854.

The first edition, containing the earliest published map of the transit of the Northwest Passage, published just days after the news arrived in England. The map is by E.A. Inglefield, the commander of the Phoenix and shows the coast with discoveries by many explorers plus the route of the Investigator, 1850-1853, and her sledge parties. “This chart was published seven days after Inglefield returned from the Arctic with news of the discovery of the North-West Passage” (Royal Museums Greenwich G285:1). Also contains reports from Inglefield, Cresswell, M'Clure, Kellett, and McCormick, and particularly early news from Belcher’s expedition. Arctic Bib. 45241; Tourville 1831; TPL 3253.

Folio (335 x 206mm). 225 pp. 26 wood-engraved illustrations in text, 5 folding maps, the largest being the Northwest passage map by E.A. Inglefield (light browning, some dampstain at beginning). Original blue wrappers (pale dampstaining, rebacked). Provenance: library of the Palais de la Paix (inkstamp on upper cover) – Explorer Books.
