M’CLINTOCK, Francis Leopold (1819-1907). A Narrative of the Discovery of the Fate of Sir John Franklin and his Companions. London: John Murray, 1859.
The first edition of M’Clintock’s account of his third expedition in search of Franklin. This voyage was financed by Lady Franklin herself. "[M'Clintock's] account is important not only for the discovery of significant clues about the fate of Franklin and the members of his expedition, but also for its scientific information. There is an extensive geological account in the appendix, and M’Clintock’s ‘Meteorlogical Observations in the Arctic Seas,’ was republished in 1859 by the Smithsonian” (Hill). Octavo (218 x 135mm). Frontispiece, 14 plates, 4 folding maps including 1 in lower cover pocket, 32 pp. advertisements dated January 1860 (some dampstaining to a couple plates, mostly marginal). Blue publisher’s cloth stamped in gilt (some repair to hinges, endpapers renewed). Provenance: High Latitude, Bainbridge Island.
