SNOW, W. Parker (1817-1895). Voyage of the Prince Albert in Search of Sir John Franklin: A Narrative of Every-Day Life in the Arctic Seas. London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1851.
A lovely copy of this Franklin Search narrative, authored by the surgeon on an 1850 voyage to Lancaster Sound funded by Lady Franklin. "Though the Prince Albert crew discovered traces of the Franklin expedition's first winter encampment on Beechey Island, upon their empty-handed return, Snow was convinced that Forsyth had sabotaged the success of the search by his refusal to go on or to pursue Snow's foretold route. For years afterwards, Snow persistently but vainly petitioned the Admiralty to send him out again in command of any vessel, however small..." (Hill). Arctic Bib. 16362; Hill 1598; Sabin 85560.
Octavo (195 x 128mm). 4 color lithographed plates, including frontispiece and additional title after drawings by the author (light spotting to frontis.); folding lithographed map. 32-page publishers' catalogue at end dated June, 1850. Original navy cloth stamped in blind and gilt (slight lean). Provenance: William Herbert Hobbs (American geologist, 1864-1953; bookplate over ads on upper inside cover) – High Latitude, Bainbridge Island.
