WILKES EXPEDITION – PALMER, James Croxall (1811-1883). Thulia: A Tale of the Antarctic. New York: Samuel Colman, 1843.
The first edition of the "earliest published Antarctic poetry" (Rosove). This delightful work recalls Palmer's time under the command of Charles Wilkes in the United States Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842. He was aboard the U.S.S. Flying-Fish which achieved the highest southern latitude to date. "The ice, the piles of ice, arrayed / In forms of awful grandeur still; But all their terrors how they fade, / Before proud man's sublimer will" (p. 36). Octavo (227 x 147mm.) Half-title. Wood-engraved plate and 11 illustrations by A.T. Agate, 2 of which are full-page (some foxing). Original dark brown cloth, blocked in gilt and blind (light chipping to spine ends and corners, endpapers spotted, hinges weak). Provenance: High Latitude, Bainbridge Island.
