ASTRUP, Eivind (1871-1895). With Peary near the Pole. London and Philadelphia: C. Arthur Pearson Ltd. and J. B. Lippincott Co., 1898.

An attractive copy of the first English edition of Astrup’s account of his service on the Peary expeditions and time living among the Inuit. Astrup pioneered the combination of dog sleds and skis that revolutionized polar expeditions, and is still the youngest person to ever receive the Order of Saint Olav. He died tragically young while on a solo ski trip. The Philadelphia imprint appears to be uncommon. Arctic Bib. 777.

Octavo (209 x 141mm). Portrait frontispiece, 5 plates, folding map, in-text illustrations (occasional light spots). Publisher’s original decorated burgundy cloth. Provenance: High Latitude, Bainbridge Island.
