BALCH, Edwin Swift (1856-1927). The North Pole and Bradley Land. Philadelphia: Campion and Company, 1913.
A first edition presentation copy of Balch’s discussion of the Peary-Cook debate. Peary and Cook clashed over who had been the first to reach the North Pole—Balch here sides with Cook, although the courts and public opinion at the time did not. Bradley Land is the name that Frederick Cook gave to land that he claimed to have seen in the Arctic in 1909. Arctic Bib. 999; Ricks p. 32; Tourville 363; Wickersham 4884.
Quarto (260 x 173mm). In-text map. Publisher’s original red cloth, top edge gilt. Provenance: Edgar H. Butler (c. 1913; presentation inscription, a prominent resident of Germantown, PA) – George S. MacManus, Co.
