The first edition account of the Arctic expedition on the Polaris, written by its surgeon. The captain, C. F. Hall, died during the voyage and Bessels was accused of poisoning him; after the crew’s eventual rescue, he was cleared of all charges. However, a later study of Hall’s body indicated that he may have died from arsenic poisoning at Bessels’s hand after all. Arctic Bib. 1503

Original green cloth, wax seal on spine, photo of Greenland and obituary of Bessels pasted in to front free endpaper (some wear to caps). Provenance: B. Westermann & Co (tag) – John Binney (bookplate) – Aquila Books.
