A presentation copy of the first edition, inscribed and signed by the author on the half-title, dated Washington, D.C., 21 December 1940. Brainard was among the only six men who survived the Greely expedition. Arctic Bib. 2073.
Octavo (215 x145 mm). Frontispiece portrait; other photographic plates (small tape stain to half-title). Original blue cloth gilt, map endpapers (touch of spotting at ends). Provenance: Mr. and Mrs. A.G. Degendorf (presentation inscription) – High Latitude, Bainbridge Island.
