The first edition of the atlas produced by the United States Northern Boundary Commission. With this report, the complete borders between the United States and Great Britain's territories set in the treaties of 1818 and 1846 were finalized, The survey of these boundary lines had been interrupted by the disagreement over the water boundaries in the Straits of Georgia described in the Treaty of 1846, and later by the Civil War and building of the transcontinental railroad.
